What is the benefit of the variable flow teat?
The variable flow teat has a slot rather than holes, which provides three flow rates with the one teat. By simply turning the bottle, the variable flow teat changes the flow rate to adjust to your baby's changing needs, easily and at any time. When turned to the fast flow setting, the variable flow teat is also suitable for use with thicker feeds. The variable flow teat has also been found to be very effective when feeding premature babies. A premature baby's underdeveloped facial muscles and 'suck, swallow, breathe' rhythm can cause the baby to tire quickly making feeding more difficult.
How long can I use a teat before it needs replacing?
Philips AVENT teats are made from silicone rubber. Since silicone does not wear out or change shape, the teats will need to be changed less frequently than latex teats. We recommend changing the teats in any event after 3 months use, for hygiene reasons. Always inspect the teats before use and throw away if damaged.
Will the holes in the teat change size?
The holes in the teats are laser cut and will not change in size over time. If your baby is having a harder time getting milk, the teat is probably clogged. To unclog the teat, roll the tip of the teat between your thumb and forefinger to loosen any build-up. Remember to wash the teats with soap and water after each use. If you make a habit of rolling the tip of the teat between your fingers with each wash, you will make sure that any remaining breast milk or formula is cleaned out. Always be sure to rinse the bottle and teat well after washing.
