Philips Net TV

The Net TV feature in Philips TV sets represents an integrated solution. In consumers’ minds, the TV is for effortless relaxation. They would very much like to also enjoy online services from the comfort of their sofa.

The online services concept is a great way to blend these two experiences in an open and standardized environment and create an enriched interactive consumer experience, as well as new business opportunities for companies that wish to create interactive services on TV, with business models varying from ad revenues to e-commerce.

Net TV partnerships

The basis of all good partnerships is a shared interest and a desire to succeed.
Net TV partners are brought into direct and close contact with consumers via the (former) mass medium TV. The success lies in the quality of the contact for both you and the consumer: a rich, relaxed TV experience with response and dialogue options, for entertainment or practical purposes. Philips promotes customer satisfaction; our clients like to view Internet content on the TV screen from the comfort of their own sofa. By facilitating your services and content we can make help to ensure your success.

Our proposition is based on giving you access to consumers in their living room via Net TV through a dedicated service portal, as well as providing technical and commercial support. Entrepreneurs employ Net TV to extend their reach, enrich their media mix, generate leads or for the purposes of I-commerce.

To maximize the consumer’s viewing experience, all Net TV content and service providers compose their pages in CE-HTML.

The business deal between Philips and the content and service providers is flexible and is based on a no-cure-no-pay policy. Contact one of our representatives for further details.

Net TV specifics

With Philips’ Net TV you can present your service experience to consumers in full-screen format, directly in their living room. To do this, you can use the same Internet assets you have already created for PC-based websites.

Net TV’s service and content providers are not forced into a ‘tight grid’; anybody can join and develop a CE-HTML compliance service that is readable and navigable by consumers from the comfort of their sofa.

TV is not a high-interaction device, like a PC with a keyboard and mouse (where you have to sit up), but more of a low-interaction device, with just a simple remote control.

Nevertheless, consumers will want to have the widest possible choice of content and services, brought together by the portal (which includes national and international services) and presented in a simple (10ft) user interface, so they can navigate and choose the desired service at the click of a button.
The portal offers direct access to services that are customized for viewing on your TV.

TV sets with the Net TV feature have a full browser on board. It is based on the open CE-HTML specification, which is a subset of existing open Internet standards, such as XHTML1.0, CSS TV Profile 1.0, DOM level 2 (the Core, Style, Events, and a subset of the HTML modules), ECMAScript 262 (3rd edition) and XMLHttpRequest (AJAX).

Additionally, CE-HTML describes specific extensions for TV use, including Media object (for A/V rendering control), spatial navigation (up-down/left-right/OK) and guidance for text input with a simple TV remote control (SMS style).

CE-HTML (i.e. CEA-2014 or Web4CE) was co-developed by major CE companies and standardized by the CE Association. The Open IPTV Forum has chosen CE-HTML as its TV browser standard.

This standard is important because if all TV manufacturers adopt the same standard, one website will be interpretable by all TV sets, irrespective of brand. This will limit unnecessary diversity and promote a much higher level of efficiency for content and service providers, enabling them to offer more services to a larger homogeneous installed base.

Ad & Media agencies

Media convergence is a trend that is having a high impact on the entire advertising and media industry. In this respect, the specific convergence of TV and the Internet could be seen as something that will definitely shake up and change the conventional media landscape.

Enterprises
  1. will have a new form of access to their target group’s living room
  2. will be able combine the emotional and visual impact of TV with the power of direct marketing, sales & digital distribution
  3. will reschedule their cross media and distribution mix and will need new ad formats

These are three ways for enterprises to put an end to the ‘50% waste’ of their advertising budget by targeting, focusing & relating to the consumer.

The customers themselves will be able to take more control, arrange delivery on demand, and connect & interact.

So what will you do?

We will be delighted to provide you with information and support to enable you to explore the new media era that is just dawning. If you want to advise your client or develop a Net TV site for him or her, you can count on us for support.

See our contact page for details of the contact person in your country.
